![]() The singer-songwriter has turned her viral hit into a critically acclaimed career that’s now six albums in. But in three minutes and 13 seconds of pure pop bliss, the Mission, British Columbia, native became a household name the world over, setting herself on a trajectory as bright and shiny as her signature track. Long before she stormed the charts with “Call Me Maybe,” Carly Rae Jepsen was a small-town folk singer best known for making it to the finals of Canadian Idol. Her TH order? An iced cappuccino and Timbits. Just last year, Lavigne informed Entertainment Tonight Canada of her plans to immediately hit the Tim Horton’s drive-thru as soon as she began the Canadian leg of her most recent tour. Despite the singer’s global success, she’s still a Canadian at heart. Throughout all of her mainstream success, Lavigne has embraced her Canadian roots she even big-upped her home of “small-town Napanee“ on the Let Go track “My World.” Lavigne kept churning pop-rock gems on subsequent records like Under My Skin and The Best Damn Thing, while her 2022 LP, Love Sux, was one of her best-reviewed albums yet. Angsty anthems like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi” secured the Ontario-born singer’s status as the “pop-punk princess,” and paved the way for young women to claim space in the genre’s reemergence. ![]() ![]() These Winnipeg dudes, led by singer Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, were blue-collar rockers with hits like “Share the Land,” “Undun,” and the underrated “Hand Me Down World,” as well as their tribute to their homeland, “Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon.” (Note: Damn right we’re counting Bachman-Turner Overdrive as a Guess Who offshoot, since Bachman was flying the same flag in “Takin’ Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.” When he rejoined his old mates, they proudly played BTO hits as their own.) He explained their music by saying, “It’s like a beer commercial.” Rival bands were jealous of the fangirl love - the singer in Quiet Riot sneered to Rolling Stone, “When Loverboy get offstage, they put on their Lacoste shirts and play tennis.” But Loverboy are still killing it on the road to this day, and still taking fans to (almost) paradise. “We don’t pull our pants down like Jim Morrison did,” guitarist Paul Dean told Rolling Stone. Loverboy rocked countless proms with bangers like “Working for the Weekend” and “Lady of the 80’s,” but their moment of genius was “Hot Girls in Love,” from the Hot Girl Summer of 1983. They won a huge audience full of girls wearing headbands and leg warmers. The Calgary studs knew how to work a red leather catsuit and a mega-cheese guitar riff with the high-pitched sex moans of singer Mike Reno. The AT gets about 10m flat, which is generally unheard of from of reverse plunger blaster of the N-Strike range. This means that the various sights that Nerf offers can actually be useful. It is possible that this also affects the accuracy, with the AT being surprisingly accurate, despite using Streamlines. This gives it drastically more range, despite having a long barrel. The AT does use a 'reverse plunger', like the Recon and Maverick, but the Air Restrictor is different, alowing more air and therefore more power into the chamber. The AT sports surprising power, being able to out-range all the blasters I have previously reviewed (except perhaps the Reflex on a good shot). Jamming shouldn't occur either if you follow the above tips. Because of the slam-fire, the AT only fires when the pump is pushed and held forward. ![]() Often the problem is that the pump is not all the way forward. Some others complain that, when single-firing, it doesn't shoot all the time. This is often due to the person not using enough force when sliding the pump back and forth. However, many people complain about the AT that the pump keeps locking up. Even though there is a sling point at the back of the pump handle, I still find it comfortable. The pump handle is also very comfortable, although I find it a bit short. It's almost as if they carved the handle just for me (which they didn't). The curves are perfectly carved and fit my hand almost exactly. The grip handle of the Alpha Trooper is extremely comfortable. ![]() This ROF is generally only heard of in voltage increases for full-auto blasters, semi-auto blasters and Magstrikes/RF20 etc. In some cases, people can fire faster than Stampedes and Vulcans, firing at up to nearly 5 darts per second. What this essentially means is that you can hold the trigger down, and slide the pump back and forth very fast, increasing the rate-of-fire drastically. In combining the Recon with the Raider, Nerf has also given the AT the ability to 'slam-fire'. For the first few months this is not apparent, but after a year or so the drum mechanism also weakens, further increasing the chance of misfeeding and jamming, at which point its drastically increased misfeed and jam rate is apparent even when simply loading it up. It complements the AT well, considering the AT's low profile and low weight.Īs a CS drum however, the 18 dart drum has an inherent chance of misfeeding and jamming higher than that of straight clips (mags), due to the drum mechanism. Some have commented that the drum is quite 'cute'. The 18 dart drum is a welcome downsize of the Raider's huge 35 dart drum, because it is a quarter of the size, yet still has half the capacity. In terms of aesthetics, the AT isn't revolutionary, butit makes up for this in its functionality. (well, being 6+ is a good start, but that's it) This makes it very easy to use, no matter what age you are. The Alpha Trooper functions from a pump-action grip (the big grey bit on the front of the AT), which, despite having a sling hole, is surprisingly comfortable. Sadly, it doesn't come with its own stock, which is why it might be worthwhile investing in a Recon. The Alpha Trooper comes with a small 18 (although it holds 20) dart drum and 18 streamlines. This also holds the title of being my favourite blaster for two and a half years (since X-mas 2010) ![]() ie This combines the Recon and Raider into something more awesome. It features the Raider's slam-fire function, exclusive drum magazine (in a smaller package) and lack of barrel attachment capability, while it sports the Recon's looks, weight, vertical clip (mag) dock system, stock attachment system, tactical rail and yellow colouring. It is often said that the Alpha Trooper combines the Recon CS-6 and Raider CS-35 into something better. In my opinion, it is also the most awesome. The Alpha Trooper is one of Nerf's 2010 new blasters, along with the Spectre REV-5, Barrel Break IX-2, Barricade RV-10 and the Stampede ECS. ![]() ![]() I'm still not convinced it's working as smoothy as it did, but that might be me being overly sensitive to it at this point. That experience taught me an important lesson. In those days, I would have killed for a 10-pound striper. I watched in fascination as a 10-pound striper rose from the depths and very quietly ate that plug. One very hot August afternoon, I was walking back from the beach to our tent on the southside when I saw a young man casting a plug under the bridge during dead slack current. I recall shortly after I began fishing for stripers at night at Indian River Inlet in the mid-1960s, I was convinced they only fed during the dark on a hard-running current. Striped bass, as a general rule, feed during periods of low light. In the Cape Region, the best bet for finding a striper in that slot is going to be along one of the walls out in the bay, along the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal or the Broadkill River, and possibly from the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park. Anglers are allowed one striped bass between 20 and 25 inches per day during this time period within these confines. “It’s great to be representing the rest of the custom rod builders and rod component companies in the industry,” Heim added.Delaware has a summer striped bass season that covers the Delaware Bay and its tributaries from July 1 until Aug. After 37 category winners were crowned, American Tackle Company came out on top as the sole owners of “Best of Show.” Heim said the business has won category awards before, but this is its first Best of Show win at ICAST. This year’s ICAST New Product Showcase featured 1,087 new products from 292 companies. Now – using blow molding – more products with curves and ergonomic designs are making their way to the show floor. Previously, Heim said most carbon products in fishing were cylindrical products that were cut by hand, baked and then sanded to form. It’s sensitive and we feel that the time is right for carbon to be widely accepted.” It’s lightweight, it’s extremely durable and strong. But we think carbon is going to be the preferred material of the future. People are used to using cork, which is essentially tree bark, and they’ve been using that forever. ![]() “There is a demand but there hasn’t yet been the same recognition for carbon in this industry that we see in others like cycling. “In my opinion, this is the perfect time to jump on the bandwagon and push carbon along,” said Heim. Heim said the company has been working for almost 10 years to refine the manufacturing process for its carbon rod handles, first working with reel seats and rod butts before finally borrowing a blown carbon building technology from the bicycle industry to create the new ICAST Best of Show champion.Īccording to Heim, carbon rod handles have been available in the fishing industry since the 1980s however, his team believes the time has finally arrived for the material to be seen as a widespread replacement for traditional handles made of cork. The Tsuka 2 Complete Carbon Handle is a masterwork from the Florida-based custom rod manufacturer, well-known for introducing the MicroWave Guide System about a decade ago. “But at this point, it’s hard to overlook them because this is true innovation.” “Components are often overlooked,” said American Tackle Company's Darrin Heim. A decade of design work paid off on Thursday as American Tackle Company took home “Best of Show” honors at sportfishing’s largest trade show with a sleek, nearly weightless custom rod component: the Tsuka 2 Complete Carbon Handle. ![]() ![]() ![]() My windows were fogging up when the heater was turned on. The great magician Teller, one half of the famous duo Penn and Teller, recently recalled how he discovered one of Houdini's inventions at a Los Angeles auction held by the late Sid Radner, who amassed one of the largest collections of Houdini materials in the world. It depicts Houdini at his most theatrical, wearing makeup and facing the camera with a calculated mysterious gaze. A 1920 gelatin silver print by an unidentified artist resides in collections of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.
